Sunlight has enormous benefits but can also be very damaging especially to the skin of children. Australia is a sunny country and Aussies enjoy the outdoors as well as sporting activities. However, we need to be mindful to protect our children even during winter or on cloudy days when the UV index can still be very high.
Here are some simple sun protection tips for children
- Avoid direct sunlight on unprotected skin for more than just a couple of minutes.
- Stay in shaded areas whenever possible.
- Appropriate clothing including a wide brimmed hat, shirt with sleeves and pants. Use sun-protective clothing when at a beach or during sports if possible
- Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to all exposed skin. Don’t forget the ears, nose, neck, hands and feet. Use and reapply water resistant sunscreen for outdoor water activities.
